Case Study: Advanced Electroadhesive Brakes Provide Precision Holding for Linear Motion Systems

A Collaboration with SCHNEEBERGER North America and Copley Controls.

New Paper-Thin Brakes Solve Old Problems

ESTAT Actuation,  SCHNEEBERGER, and Copley Controls recently collaborated to showcase ESTAT’s UltraSlim brakes. Our brakes offer an easy and effective method for stopping a linear motor in a vertical configuration.

Linear motors are rarely used in a vertical configuration due to safety concerns. When they are, large bulky brakes that add significant mass to the moving elements are needed. Adding a brake requires a bigger motor, which requires a bigger brake, and so on and so forth. ESTAT’s brakes stop this snowballing cycle of increasing weight and costs. Our UltraSlim brakes add mere grams to linear motion systems and have negligible power requirements.

Combining ESTAT’s brakes with SCHNEEBERGER’s Absolute Measuring System and Copley Control’s servo drive further simplifies both component selection and setup. SCHNEEBERGER’s AMS is integrated directly into the carriage and rails, thus eliminating assembly steps and reducing opportunities for misalignment. Copley’s XEC-230-15 Servo drive can control ESTAT’s brakes directly making emergency stopping or precision holding a snap to implement.

Check out the white paper below to learn more about this demonstration and to learn how a brake that is only 0.015″ thick can bring new capabilities to your linear motion systems.
