Description

Overview

The UltraSlim Linear Clutch is a flat, linear configuration of ESTAT’s electroadhesive webs.

In its off-the-shelf configuration, the Linear Clutch is capable of transmitting up to 100 N (approx. 25 lbs) in tension while consuming just milliwatts of power. Maximum slip force scales with applied voltage and clutch surface area. Boasting a thickness of only 1.05 mm, it is ideal for wearable robotics applications, walking robots, and general motion control in systems requiring light-weight, power-efficient actuation. For custom orders, travel length and dimensions are configurable for each application. Note: The Linear Clutch is designed to support tensile loads only; for more information on linear models that also support compressive loads, contact [email protected].

Key Features

  • Paper-thin: Only 1.05 mm thick, ESTAT’s Linear Clutch can fit virtually anywhere.
  • Flexible: Made of thin but strong electroadhesive webs, the Linear Clutch is built to bend.
  • Ultra-efficient: Consumes less than 0.1 mW of maintenance power at 400 V operating.
  • Fast response time: Engages and releases in < 25 msec at 400 V operating.
  • Tunable slip force: Maximum slip force scales with both applied voltage and clutch surface area.

Primary Applications

  • Linear stages → stiff and high-force locking
  • Wearable motion assistance → electrically control clutches to help movement when desired, and get out of the way the rest of the time.
  • Haptics → low weight, profile, and power consumption, for powerful force feedback

Device Operation

ESTAT clutches are load-bearing capacitors. Applying voltage across the clutch webs causes accumulation of positive charges and negative charges on each side of the clutch. This results in adhesion between the clutch webs which prevents further extension of the clutch. When disengaged, the clutch is free to slide with only minimal resistance from tensioners. As capacitors, ESTAT clutches require minimal maintenance current to remain engaged (< 10 µA). The clutch disengages when the voltage potential is removed.
